The Downtown Council’s annual luncheon is one of the biggest events each year in Kansas City’s business community. And to make it complete, the Council knew they needed a video communicating the year’s theme: evolution.
Selected from a competitive pool of applicants, the team at Spectacles immediately set to work crafting a cohesive story of downtown Kansas City’s triumphant evolution since the 1990s. In turn, we were able to deliver the video to-spec, on time, and under budget.
“Spectacles did a masterful job in helping the Downtown Council tell the story of the evolution of downtown. From helping us divide the past 20+ years into different eras to tell the story to coming up with impactful animation that helped set up what the future holds, the video made a lasting impression on our luncheon audience.”

We knew the luncheon audience would be full of Kansas City local business leaders: people who have spent years living and investing in their communities. So from a writing perspective, we had a great opportunity to communicate with a depth often impossible when dealing with broader, more general audiences. That meant references to shared experiences and knowledge of the Kansas City area which generated a sense of familiarity with the audience.
For our animation and visual design, we took inspiration directly from the Downtown Council’s existing branding and event materials, which defined our orange/green/blue color scheme which appeared throughout the video and most prominently in the “phases” animations which formed the narrative spine of the video.
With plenty of back-and-forth and productive collaboration, in the end, we were able to produce a compelling and effective video which celebrated downtown Kansas City’s evolution, that both parties were more than proud of, on time and under budget.
